Gowbarrow Fell 21st October, 2018

Updated: Dec 10, 2018

Before we set off to the Lakes I had looked at which fells we should aim to do. Gowbarrow Fell was not too far from Little Mell Fell and so I thought that would be a good second fell of the day. We drove the short distance towards Ullswater and were soon parked up at the Aria Force car park.

The waterfall is fabulous and the volume of water does remind you of why the Lakes are there. We stood for a good while watching the water cascade before starting off up the Fell.

This is a walk of contrasts. After the waterfall there is a lovely walk through forest before you reach the gate out onto the fellside.

The rainbow that greeted us was wonderful and seemed to end in the field just beyond where we were walking. From the gate depicted above you have a few hundred metres until you turn right to head up the fell to the top.

In effect, you are following the edge of these trees along a well defined path to the summit. The rocky outcrop at the bottom of the picture is a perfect place for lunch!

Suitably refreshed we set off on the climb to the summit. I mentioned contrasts before because the forest gave way to fell, ten you have a short section by the side of the wood shown before the passage of many feet becomes obvious.

With the usual "is that the top?" only to find that the real top is hiding, we could soon see the destination.

As you can see, you can't go wrong on this walk and we were lucky to find someone at the top who was happy to take a photo of us completing another Wainwright fell. Yep - soaked!
